What Shopping Has Taught Me: Don't trust hanger appeal.

Yesterday I told you that you size doesn't matter, fit does, and today I'm going to be talking about hanger appeal.  I think I'm very guilty of making quick cruises through stores and missing potentially cute things because they just don't hang well.  Case in point:

This. Dress. Sigh.... I had walked past it, completely unimpressed at Target. I'd originally had my eye on this cute option, until I saw the Target dress on my blogging friend Kim and I knew immediately it was a great dress, it just looked awful on the hanger. I literally went and tried it on and bought it about two hours after seeing it on Kim. I mean Target is "on the way home..." I also got really excited because I've been wanting to recreate this pin (along with the about twenty other striped dress looks), and now I can! I also already have a second look planned for next week by pairing the dress with this. So excited. Morale of the story:  seriously, don't trust the hanger, if it looks like it has potential, try it on. You might be pleasantly surprised.

*Also, this necklace? Rue 21 for $10. I'm surprised the alarms didn't sound when I entered the store, being I'm not a 12 year old girl, but whatever, it's super cute!

  1. Super cute! Who knew Rue21 had cute jewelry like that? I agree about hanger appeal. It can work in reverse too. It looks cute on the hanger and horrible on. This dress does not fall into that category!

  2. You and Kim look so great in this dress! If I didn't already have a striped dress, I would have purchased it, too. Great necklace. I always pass by Rue 21, might have to check it out now.

  4. This is exactly what happened to me when I went wedding dress shopping!!!!!! The dress on the hangar didnt' look like much until I put it on and then I was in love. You can't tell how something looks until you try it on. I've had it happen the other way many times that I loved it on the hangar and then hated on me. You definitely have to try things on.

    Love your dress. Great outfit!!!!

This is a great dress. I have a similar one and it goes with everything.

  6. I think I have the opposite problem...I think something is really cute on the hanger and when I try it on, I hate it!

I love that fringe necklace! Who knew Rue 21 had such pretty jewelry? PS Come link up your post today on my blog :)

  7. Great tip! I was the same way about skinny jeans several years ago (I just didn't think I would look good in (nonboot cut) that style...it took a very good LOFT employee to get me to try on skinny jeans and now I love them! :)

  8. It looks great on you, and I love how you styled it! Your booties are adorable. :) You're so right, there have been many times I've passed something up because it looks weird just hanging there. So glad that wasn't the case with this dress! And I'm disappointed in how often the opposite is true: looks great on-hanger, not so great on me. :( Haha! Loving this series so far!

  10. Yeah I think this is a tough one. Unless I'm specifically looking for something in particular, I usually just browse through and see what catches my eye. So I know I'm not so great at this one, unless it's something that's on my wish-list, and then I'll try it out even if it doesn't look all that great on the hanger.

  12. It's totally true! Sometimes something can look terrible on the hanger, but awesome on. The opposite can happen too. You look super cute in this dress, I'm glad you went back and got it!

  14. I have this problem in my own closet! I'll look at something and think, "Why did I buy this?" Thank goodness that the blog is there to remind me! Oh yeah! It actually looks cute on! This dress looks great on you. Good thing you gave it a shot!

  15. This happens to me a lot too! I just pass something by and then I see it in the catalog or online or on someone else and I'm like WHY DIDN'T I BUY THAT? haha! I love that classy dress and perfect for fall with the booties and denim jacket!

  16. Great advice! I am definitely guilty of passing things up because they don't look so great on the hanger.
Great deal on that necklace--it's gorgeous!

  18. That dress is super cute. I can use another Stripped Dress. Love how you styled it. Sometimes things that look great on hangers don't look s good on the actual body & vice-versa. That Necklace is Gorgeous - looks like one from the Baubble Bar.

  19. I love the dress on you! This whole outfit is fabulous! And I totally hear you about hanger appeal, I'm sure I've overlooked so many great things because they just looked bad on the hanger!
