My New Favorite Outfit: Want, Want, Want

Want, Want, Want

I haven't been doing as much outfit planning lately. If I see something for inspiration, I'll set pieces aside, however, I've kind of been trying to detox from Pinterest.  I feel like pinning things is just kind of making me want to buy more things....then I want to buy ALL THE THINGS.  Hence, the detox.

I also went through and deleted a lot of "pretty" pins from my boards, because they all had pieces in them that were unlike anything else I have, therefore they made me want to buy things to complete and re-create the outfit.  One of my girlfriends and I were talking about it and she said how she'd make a mental list of things to buy based on her pins, not her needs. Her words: "Wow, this leopard button-down would be a great staple in my closet!" Yep, because a leopard button-down is a staple... See my point.

Exodus 20:17 says: "You shall not covet your neighbor's house. You shall not covet your neighbor's wife, or his male or female servant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor." Now, I don't really covet the first part of this verse but God makes it pretty clear when he says anything that belongs to your neighbor.

I am very guilty of getting a big case of the "I wants" when I scroll through Pinterest and my Instagram feed.  It's one thing to gain some fashion inspiration, but it's different to covet, then want, then buy...buy...buy.  You can also get stuck on the covet part and feel like you are less than who your really are because you don't have that one thing everyone else has. Herringbone vest? Buffalo check vest? Duck boots? Want...want...want.  There is absolutely nothing healthy about this. Trends will change, people will move on to new trends, and all the buying in the world will never add any long lasting happiness to your life, or mine.

I am definitely not perfect, but I want to make a conscious effort in the new year to not let the Social Media Machine rule my purchases and wants.  It's fun to see exciting outfits and how to wear fun trends, but that's all it should be.  I hope the same for you all too.  When I show clothes I hope you don't get the urge to want...want...want.  I hope I can give you some inspiration, but it can be just that.

As for today's outfit: I wore for church and picked in about thirty seconds while wrapped in towel. I've had this cardigan for a few years and same goes for this dress. I like how it came together I didn't need Pinterest or anything else.  I've got plenty to chose from in my closet and the ability to create my own outfits, and you do too. : )

  1. I am so happy you posted this! I feel so inferior to the other women on IG and blogs. I have been buying things I dont need. I started a new budget and am excited for the challenge. Thanks for the inspiration! Susan

  2. Well you look fantastic, see you don't need Pinterest! I was organizing and rearranging my boards over break and I realized how long it's been since I needed Pinterest to copy a look.

  3. I really should go through my pinterest boards and clean up too. That's a great idea. I did stop pinning outfits I couldn't immediately recreate a long time ago though. It really helps curb impulse buys!

  4. Pinterest is a deep, dark hole from which you really have to remove yourself from. Seriously, they need a rehab for it!

  5. Oh Ginny, I hear ya on this one. I tend to look at a lot of Pins and get stuck on the one item I don't own and obsess a bit, convincing myself if I that ONE thing, everything in my closet would go together and be complete. Hmmm, sounds a lot like coveting to me. I have to be on guard since I get tempted that way. Sometimes I have to take a break too, deleting "deals" emails before looking at them, and not looking at Pinterest and sales stuff for a bit. Its a good thing. Sometimes I'll search Pinterest using an item I own and get ideas that way instead. You're doing the right thing! Thanks for sharing your heart!

  6. I totally agree with you. Especially in the blogging world its so easy to say. I want this and think that means you NEED it. Eventually you'll look at it and wonder why you wanted it so bad

  7. We all definitely have too many "wants" when we really don't need much. Social media doesn't help. I can't believe you put this outfit together in 30 seconds. Very well put together. ~Cynthia

  8. I'm so glad you posted this! I have a board on Pinterest that only has outfits that I can CURRENTLY re-create with clothing I have. It becomes inspiration, not a shopping list. Love the cleansing of too much want, want, want!

  11. I took a small Instagram break and hardly get on Pinterest anymore...it's too overwhelming, makes me want things that I don't need and also feel down sometimes...I think it's good to acknowledge and make changes...all in moderation...it's okay to want...it's human nature. :)

  12. I know what you mean! It gets so hard looking at Pinterest and seeing all these perfectly curated outfits and homes and makes me feel disappointed I/my home doesn't look like that. But you're so right that you don't need Pinterest to put together an awesome looking outfit and feel good about yourself:) Hope you're having a great start to 2015, Ginny!

  14. I hear what you are saying Ginny. I am currently working on a rather lengthy post on my review after a 30 day period of no shopping. And it touches so many points of what you just talked about. i am so glad you shared this here because it is something I think a lot of women deal with. Happy New Year!

  16. I have totally struggled with this, too! So hard. I know I don't have the instagram wardrobe, so I just try to do my own things and make things work for what I like.
