I'm super excited to be starting a little series this week, obviously called "Pinspiration to Reality." I've taken a two month hiatus from my dress clothes, and honestly I needed to do a little brushing up on how to dress up. Where better to look than my friend Pinterest! I started thinking about all the times I've tried looks and failed, so I thought it would be fun to share with you all some tips for pinspiration success.
The first tip is to shop your closet. When I'm pinning things I often times think, oh, I have a gingham top like that, and pin the look. BUT what if I don't have any of the other pieces to complete the look? That's where this tip comes in: think about what you have that's a similar shape or color in you closet before heading to the mall to recreate your new favorite pinned look.
Here's my inspiration today from Little Miss Fearless. I loved this look, but didn't have the exact pieces in my closet, so I improvised. I decided to wear my striped tank dress as a skirt, and changed out the white tee for a button-up. I had similar sandals, but wanted to wear my espadrilles instead. I guess another tip would be: don't play dress up, make the look your own. Here's my take:
A tip to pulling off the dress to skirt idea is in the layering. I put a white cami over the tank dress to cover up the stripes on top before adding the white button-down; this help makes a more clean and polished look. I then tied the shirt in the front, which might be my favorite new trend.
What tips do you have for pinning success?
Jacket: The Limited (circa 2004ish?) similar
Button Down: ? (fashion swap) similar
Dress as skirt: Target $15 same
Necklace: ebay $10 same(ish)
Shoes: JCrew (circa 2005ish?) similar

I love your outfit! The mint bubble necklace is a perfect compliment to the coral. I try to recreate pinterest looks with items I already own as well. It doesn't have to be a perfect match, I just use it as inspiration!
ReplyDeleteSuch a great outfit - I love this series idea! And those SHOES. Gorg.

Love "shopping your closet" and making the looks you pin your own! I love the look you came up with! I may have to try this dress as a skirt/shirt trend! You look fabulous as always. :)
ReplyDeletegood job on the inspiration. You look AMAZING!!!!
ReplyDeleteI love how you recreated the pin but also made it your own! Great job, dear! :-)
ReplyDeleteYou look adorbs! Pinterest is my absolute (isn't it everyone's now?) favorite place to get outfit inspiration from...it's one of the only boards I actually revisit on the regular. I can't wait to start my own series (September first) about my own closet challenge. Suffice it to say, I'll be following your new series closely, love your looks!
ReplyDeleteI actually like your recreation better than the inspiration. Way excited for the new series. Definately need to get myself in that mindset too.
ReplyDeleteI love your take on it, and these are some great tips! I always have trouble recreating looks.
ReplyDeleteLove your interpretation! Isn't Pinterest the best? There are so many ideas and inspirations. Sometimes even just color combinations or layering can inspire a new outfit for me.

PS- What a great series! Can't wait to see more.
You did so great with this, and I'm now determined to FINALLY BUY A WHITE BUTTON-UP so that I can start wearing it over dresses like this. What an amazing look!
ReplyDeleteI love your take even more!
ReplyDeleteSuper, super cute. I love the stripes with denim. Believe it or not, I just recently took to Pinterest for outfit inspiration for the first time this week. Holy cow! I'm addicted now. It's definitely breathing new life into my old clothes.
ReplyDeleteThose shoes are so cute. Perfect match to that Stripped Skirt. And a Fashionista or any woman for that matter can never go wrong with the Teal/Aqua/Mint/Turquoise (or whatever color you want to call it) Bubble Necklace. I , too added a Bubble Necklace in this color and I am loving it. =)
ReplyDeleteThe red accents with the wedges and skirt make the outfit. Great combo!
ReplyDeleteGreat look! And I totally agree with your tips. I often pin outfits based on color palettes or an item I already have, but then choose something from my closet that is similar in color/pattern/etc.
ReplyDeleteCuuuuute wedges! I love the ties! They're perfect with that skirt. I need to start using my pins more - you're my motivation :)
